Ayla PR Representative with Moving Made Smooth, Inc. At Moving Made Smooth, Inc. our men are trustworthy, background checked, and well paid. That is why it is unusual when we occasionally have calls from customers shortly after their move date accusing our men of stealing an item, only to have the customers call back a few days later to say that they found the item in a drawer, behind a dresser, etc. This is not only stressful for the customer, but we have to take measures to investigate. For these reasons, it is important to know where your valuables are at all stages of the moving process. 1. Create a list of these items so you can check them off as you unpack. You can do this by hand writing/ typing a description of each item or by taking snapshots on your phone or tablet. This is a great way to make sure all your valuables made the trip to your new home. 2. Most often, I recommend packing any sentimental or valuable items in a bag or box and putting this inside your personal vehicle for the trip to your new place. This will remove any doubt that you have the items in question and you know that light fingers will not be a problem. Collect any credit cards, financial documents, jewelry, guns, etc. and load them into your car. 3. Don’t be cheap about protecting your items! It often ends up being more costly for everyone involved, including you, if your new TV gets damaged during your move. It will only cost $70-$80 to protect your TV instead of paying several hundred dollars for a new one. So invest wisely in packing materials! 4. You may also want to look into moving insurance. Moving companies are insured, but it only covers a fraction of the cost of your more valuable items. So, it is wise to purchase a little extra insurance if you have many valuable items. Moving insurance is usually fairly inexpensive and will give you better coverage for your valuables. Some homeowner’s insurance policies cover items during the moving process, so you may want to ask your insurance agent about your policy. See our Blog about Moving Insurance for more information. Following some or all of these steps can help decrease the stress you experience on move day because you will know your valuables are safe and secure.
