Ayla & Julia with Moving Made Smooth, Inc. Your moving day is going swimmingly. The movers are getting your boxes and furniture into your new home at record pace until... They get to your large leather sofa. The turn coming into your new apartment is too tight for it to fit! Uh-oh! This and other moving day problems could have been avoided if you had pre- measured your new apartment/home before you moved. At Moving Made Smooth, Inc. we recommend 2 forms of measuring... 1) We suggest measuring any large furniture you own (beds, couches, tables, etc.). You may find our links helpful for this part. Also measure the entry ways into your new dwelling and any corners (including staircases) that the furniture needs to pass through. The links can also help you with this. 2) A wise friend of Moving Made Smooth, Inc., desperate to convince her grandmother of the realities of how much and what will actually fit into their new home explained a simple, but brilliant approach. Using the measurements from the new home, she taped out the dimensions of each room in a large room of their current home. Then she explained, “This will be the space available for your furnishings in your new home. If your furniture won’t fit within the dimensions of the tape not all of your furniture can go." She then measured the dimensions of her grandmother's most important furniture first and taped off their dimensions within the taped-off area of the new room. This method is a basic yet effective approach in convincing her family of the realities of moving and to be selective in this process. The last resort is to sell the pieces of furniture that won’t fit or find a friend, neighbor, family member, or coworker that will enjoy it. There are also many places you can donate furniture, like at Goodwill. Below are some links that can help you to measure your furniture to be sure you can move it into your new home:

Ayla & Julia with Moving Made Smooth, Inc. Winter can be a tricky time for moving, but many of the obstacles have solutions that won't delay the process. Your movers will need a cleared path free of ice and snow. This applies to all entrances to the home and any areas around the moving vehicle. Moving Made Smooth's employees are covered for liability, but that is no excuse to be unprepared. By not handling this basic winter maintenance you are risking our movers and the furnishings (Your furnishings) that they carry. Be sure to put extra clothes, blankets, a first aid kit, and water in the cab of your moving truck in case you become stranded. Hand warmer pouches may also be a good idea. The truck is loaded and now you're driving. Take it slow and allow more distance to stop than you would driving your normal vehicle. On interstates and highways, choose the right lane designated for slower traffic. If mountain passes are part of your drive, bridges, overpasses, and roads at high elevation are likely to freeze. You may want to consider putting tire chains on your moving truck to improve traction. If roadways become obstructed by winter storms it is always a better idea to find a hotel and wait for the roads to be cleared rather than risking your life. Here is a link below to a few extra tips about driving a moving truck:
